Imphal: Frustrated protesters in Imphal East district of Manipur took drastic measures on Tuesday (July 23) by blocking a major road and temporarily cutting off electrical power and drinking water supplies to the neighbourhoods.

The protest is linked to longstanding demands for the repair of the Imphal-Yairipok road, which stretches from Kongba Bazar Thongkhong to Keirao-Salam in Imphal East district of Manipur.

The protest, organized by the All Kongba Road United Clubs’ Organisation (AKRUCO), began on July 19 and has escalated over the past few days.

Despite multiple appeals to the Manipur government, there has been no response to the demand for road repairs, prompting protesters to intensify their actions.

Demonstrators erected barriers using logs, bamboo and other materials, effectively blocking the road.

Some participants set fire to these barriers, disrupting traffic except for emergency vehicles, religious processions and media.

The road, already in poor condition, has worsened during the rainy season, with numerous potholes filled with water causing severe inconvenience for travellers.

A leader from AKRUCO stated that these measures are a direct reaction to the Manipur government’s neglect in addressing the road’s deteriorating state.

The road’s condition has led to significant difficulties for residents, including waterlogging and hazardous driving conditions.
