The 52nd Anniversary of Pongal Celebration-2020 was held at Moreh, the border town located about 110 km south of Imphal on Wednesday.

Works minister Thongam Biswajit Singh and water resource and sports minister Letpao Haokip were present at the Pongal celebration at Sunrise Playground of the border town.

Deputy commissioner Mayanglambam Rajkumar of Tengnoupal district, superintendent of police T Vikramjit Singh of Tengnoupal district, commandant of 43 Assam Rifles Sumit Sood along with others also attended the celebration.

Addressing the gathering, works minister Biswajit said ‘we need peace to bring change and development to our society’.

He said we should respect one another and only when we respect one another we can achieve peace.

Without peace there will be no development, he added.

Stating that construction of the Trans Asian highway has already begun after the Look East Policy was turned into the Act East Policy, he said that this is also development.

He also stated that the most important requirement in improving socio-economic condition of a society is the road infrastructure.

Further in his speech, Biswajit appreciated the inclusion of sports in the Pongal celebration and encouraging the youth.

He continued this is a very good initiative and also assured all possible support.

He also wished the people a very happy Pongal Festival.

On the other hand, minister of water resource and sports, Letpao Haokip wished the gathering a very happy Pongal celebration to the people.

He said Moreh town is like mini India inhabited by various communities peacefully.

“Let this Pongal festival culminate into a festival of unity in diversity, and bring prosperity, peace, harmony and a better future to the people,” he added.

The celebration was also marked by various cultural performances from different communities.

Civil society organization leaders, community elders among others also attended the celebration.
