Imphal: The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Somdal Police Station in Manipur’s Ukhrul district sustained injuries after being stabbed in the chest while serving an arrest warrant.

The attack was carried out by the person named in the warrant issued by the Court of the Session Judge, Ukhrul.

Police reported on Sunday that the incident took place on Friday at the home of 54-year-old Firstman Rungsung, a wanted man and an accused in a 1996 homicide case, who has been evading police for the past 30 years.

Firstman Rungsung is a resident of Talui village in Ukhrul district and the son of Kapangkhui Rungsung. According to officials, the OC was speaking to the suspectโ€™s mother when Rungsung attacked him with a concealed knife.

Inspector Krili James, OC of Somdal Police Station, along with a few unarmed personnel, had gone to the accusedโ€™s residence. While explaining the warrant to Rungsungโ€™s mother, Firstman Rungsung emerged with a hidden knife and stabbed the officer.

The police team did not carry their service weapons at the time, as officers often avoid being armed in the hill districts due to the high risk of weapons being snatched by armed insurgents.

Reports confirmed that the OC sustained minor injuries to the chest. With the reinforcement of additional forces, the assailant, who also attempted to attack other unarmed personnel while being overpowered, was captured while trying to flee.

The injured officer was initially taken to a local healthcare centre and later referred to the District Hospital in Ukhrul for further treatment.

Police sources added that a criminal case under FIR No. 1(1)2026, Somdal PS, U/S 109/118/221 BNS has been registered against Firstman Rungsung for investigation.
