Imphal: Manipur Police on Monday night stopped a large protest march in Imphal by groups demanding that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) be updated using 1951 as the base year before any fresh census is undertaken.
The demonstration was organised by local clubs, residents and Meira Paibi (women torchbearers) groups from 10 localities in Keishampat in Imphal West district. The protest followed recent remarks by Union Home Minister Amit Shah indicating that the Centre is considering the proposal to use 1951 as the base year for updating the NRC in Manipur.
The procession began from Keishamthong Hodam Leirak but was stopped by security personnel at Keishampat Junction along the Imphal airport road. A heavy police presence prevented the protesters from proceeding further towards the city centre.
The demonstrators raised slogans calling for the protection of the indigenous population and expressing concerns over demographic changes in the state.
Speaking to reporters, the protesters said the national census should be deferred until the NRC is updated based on records dating back to 1951. They also demanded stringent legal action against illegal immigration, alleged infiltration and other unlawful activities.
The protesting groups further called for individuals allegedly associated with armed Kuki militant groups to remain within designated areas.
The protesters said their demands were focused on protecting the rights and future of Manipur’s indigenous communities.
