Imphal: The Manipur government is considering filling over 8,000 vacant posts in the Home Department ahead of the February 2027 Assembly elections amid continuing efforts to strengthen security in the state.
Officials said around 8,110 vacancies had been identified across different departments as of April 2026. The proposed recruitment includes 2,900 posts in Manipur Police, 3,000 in Manipur Rifles and 1,000 in the Village Defence Force (VDF).
The vacancies also include 450 posts in Police Wireless, 200 in CID-Special Branch, 180 in Jail and 230 in Fire Services.
Officials said the Office of the Commissioner of Excise had separately initiated recruitment for more than 358 contractual posts, including inspectors, sub-inspectors, constables, LDCs and drivers, as of March 2026.
The move comes amid continuing unrest in the state following the violence reported through 2025 and early 2026.
The government is also considering raising a new Womenโs Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) after receiving approval from the Centre. Manipur currently has around 40,000 state force personnel, including nearly 9,000 VDF members.
State Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam recently said 88 of the 272 companies of Central Armed Police Forces deployed in the state had been withdrawn for election duty in West Bengal. Another 15 companies are also scheduled to be withdrawn.
The Assembly elections in Manipur are scheduled to be held in February 2027.
