Imphal: The Manipur Legislative Assembly passed a resolution on Friday urging the Centre to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state.

This move comes amidst concerns over influxes of migrants, as highlighted by a private bill introduced by Naga MLA Leishyeo Keishing from the Kamjong district bordering Myanmar.

Keishing’s bill pointed out the presence of a significant number of Myanmar nationals seeking refuge in makeshift camps across Kamjong.

As of February 2024, biometric data (unique biological identifiers) has been collected from over 5,000 Myanmar migrants residing in relief camps within the district.

This biometric registration effort was undertaken by Manipur police in collaboration with central security forces to identify undocumented migrants from Myanmar in the state’s border regions.
