Imphal: The Manipur government has identified 24,475 foreign nationals who entered the state without valid documents, Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam informed the state Assembly on Monday.
According to the minister, all those detected were Myanmar nationals. Of the total, 14,992 have been pushed back, while 9,483 remain housed in temporary relief camps in the border districts of Kamjong, Chandel and Tengnoupal.
Konthoujam provided the figures during Question Hour on September 7 in response to supplementary questions from Congress MLA Th Lokeshwor.
On the issue of biometric registration, the Home Minister said the profiling process has begun at some relief shelters. However, he noted that completing the exercise across all locations has been delayed due to the security situation in the border areas.
The district-wise figures are:
- Chandel: 14,370 Myanmar nationals detected; 9,600 pushed back; 4,770 remain in relief camps.
- Kamjong: 6,545 detected; 5,378 pushed back; 1,167 remain in camps, including facilities at Wanglee, Kaka and Namlee villages.
- Tengnoupal: 3,560 detected; 14 pushed back; 3,546 remain in relief camps.
During the session, Konthoujam also responded to a separate question from Congress MLA Kangujam Ranjit Singh concerning an attack by armed intruders on four villages in Kamjong district on May 7, 2026.
The minister ruled out the possibility of the incident being an act of external aggression.
He confirmed that the attack resulted in the destruction of 23 houses and injuries to one tribal villager. Property damage from the incident was estimated at Rs 8.4 crore.
The government is in the process of arranging compensation for those affected, while a formal investigation into the incident remains underway.
