Imphal: The first edition of the Northeast India Film Festival (NEIFF) is set to enthrall audiences in Imphal, Manipur, from March 3 to 7, 2024.

Graced by the presence of Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey as the chief guest, the festival promises a vibrant celebration of cinematic expression from across the region.

Eight films, carefully curated from Assam, Manipur, and Meghalaya, will be showcased during the five-day event. Notably, six films hail from Assam, highlighting the state’s burgeoning film industry.

Beyond entertainment, NEIFF aims to be an academic platform. Students will have the unique opportunity to interact with renowned filmmakers and gain valuable insights into the art of filmmaking.

This educational focus is made possible by the joint efforts of the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) Manipur, Film Forum Manipur (FFM), Art and Culture Department, and Manipur State Film Development Society (MSFDS), along with the sponsorship of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India.

Competitive spirit will also be ignited with cash awards in eight categories, including Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best Editing. Special Jury Awards will further recognize outstanding achievements.

On February 22, a delegation from the NEIFF organizing committee met with Governor Uikey at Raj Bhavan. Led by M. Joy Singh, Commissioner (Art and Culture, IPR), the delegation secured the Governor’s attendance at the inaugural ceremony.

Discussions also covered challenges faced by the Manipuri film community, with Governor Uikey assuring support from the Raj Bhavan. Additionally, the possibility of establishing a Censorship Branch Office in Manipur was explored.

This inaugural NEIFF represents a significant step forward for cinema in the Northeast. By showcasing diverse narratives, fostering dialogue, and nurturing talent, the festival promises to be a landmark event that celebrates the region’s rich cultural tapestry.
