Imphal: A tragic accident unfolded in Imphal West district, Manipur, on Sunday morning when a newly inaugurated iron bridge over the Imphal River collapsed.

The incident, which occurred between Irong and Murum Phibou villages under the Wangoi police station, resulted in the death of a truck driver and injuries to three others.

Reports indicate that the bridge gave way around 7 am while a goods truck, laden with cargo and travelling from Irong to Mutum Phibou village, was crossing it. The raging currents of the swollen Imphal River due to recent spates further complicated the situation.

The truck driver, identified as 48-year-old Usabuddin from Mayang Imphal, was unfortunately unable to escape the submerged vehicle and drowned. Thankfully, the three remaining occupants managed to escape the scene.

Manipur police and fire service personnel swiftly responded to the emergency.

An investigation to determine the cause of the bridge collapse is currently underway, and a case has been registered by the police.

Meanwhile, Manipur Panchayati Raj Minister Yumnam Khemchand visited the site to assess the situation. The minister has ordered a prompt inquiry into the bridge collapse and the subsequent death of the truck driver, with a deadline of three days for a report.
