Imphal: The Naga Women’s Union (NWU) has renewed its appeal for a review and reduction of excessive security deployments in Naga regions, stating that heavy militarisation in Manipur has affected civilians rather than improving security.
The Union reminded all security agencies of their professional responsibilities, stressing the need to exercise operational restraint, protect civilian lives and uphold constitutional laws without prejudice or bias.
The renewed appeal followed the July 29 killing of 29-year-old Village Guard Pouh Lanbimei Riamei in Noney district. The NWU condemned the alleged joint attack by security forces and a militant faction and called for accountability in the case.
The Union demanded a transparent and impartial investigation into Riamei’s killing and urged the government and concerned authorities to ensure that justice is delivered without delay.
Strongly condemning the armed assault at Bitiang village, located around 17 km from Noney, the NWU alleged that the incident involved a joint operation by the ZUF-J and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) CoBRA personnel.
The Union paid tribute to Riamei, describing him as a dedicated Village Guard who made the supreme sacrifice while protecting his community.
Reiterating its concerns over past incidents of violence, the NWU urged authorities to prosecute those responsible for the abduction and killing of six Naga civilians, alleging that the perpetrators operated from Leilon Vaiphei village.
The NWU said it would continue advocating for the human rights, security and dignity of the Naga people.
