Imphal: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the main partner in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, and the Indian National Congress, the principal opposition party in the Manipur Legislative Assembly, have expressed sharply differing views on how to address the state’s volatile border situation.
Manipur Congress Member of Parliament (MP) Bimol Akoijam sharply criticized the state government’s inaction over the gruesome murder of six Liangmai Naga men, openly questioning its possible complicity.
Criticizing the authorities for their silence and failure to arrest anyone involved in the brutal killings, Akoijam demanded answers on whom the administration was attempting to protect.
During his visit to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal, the Lok Sabha MP met three women who were recently freed after being held hostage by militants. He expressed deep concern over the escalating violence across the hill areas since May 3, 2023.
Noting that the deadline for the Central Government‘s probe committee had been extended by six months at the state’s request, he pledged to raise the matter in Parliament to ensure justice for the victims’ families.
Meanwhile, newly elected Rajya Sabha MP Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi of the BJP pledged to work tirelessly toward restoring peace and normalcy in the state.
Speaking at a felicitation programme held at the Youth Club, Brahmapur, in Imphal, the BJP leader thanked the central party leadership for her unopposed election to the Upper House.
Legislative Assembly Speaker Th. Satyabrata congratulated Sharda on her political milestone.
The event was also attended by Mayang Imphal MLA Kongkham Robindro, Kshetrigao AC MLA Sheikh Noorul Hassan, and several community leaders, who gathered to honour her longstanding service to the party since 1995.
