A bomb explosion claimed the life of Charubala Haokip, wife of former Saikul MLA Yamthong Haokip.

Guwahati: A bomb explosion claimed the life of Charubala Haokip, wife of former Saikul MLA Yamthong Haokip at their residence in the Kuki-Zomi dominated Kangpokpi district of Manipur.

The 59-year-old victim, a member of the Meitei community, succumbed to injuries sustained when a locally made IED detonated while she was burning waste material at thier residence at Ekou Mulam in Kangpokpi district

While no other casualties were reported, the incident has sent shockwaves through the region.

Yamthong Haokip, a member of Kuki community and a former Congress legislator who switched to the BJP in 2022, was not harmed in the explosion.

According to a police officer, the incident occurred around 3 pm on Friday afternoon but was reported early on Saturday morning. He said a locally made IED was placed among waste material at the house.

“When the deceased burned the waste material, it exploded. Everybody else is okay. There are no other fatalities or injuries,” Indian Express quoted the official as saying.

Police suspect the attack may be linked to a family dispute and are investigating the matter. No arrests have been made so far.
