Imphal: President Droupadi Murmu conferred the National Handloom Award on Takhellambam Rani Devi of Kakching Khunou Awang Keithel Leikai in Manipur’s Kakching district on August 7, marking the 12th National Handloom Day.
Rani Devi was recognised in the women weavers category for her expertise in Shaphee Lanphee in Silk Innaphi, a contemporary adaptation of the traditional Manipuri textile.
She was among 22 master weavers, artisans, designers and representatives of organisations selected from across the country for the Sant Kabir Handloom Awards and National Handloom Awards. The honours recognise contributions to preserving and promoting India’s traditional handloom heritage.
Shaphee Lanphee is a traditional black-and-red hand-embroidered textile with deep historical roots in Manipur. It was historically presented by Manipuri kings as a symbol of honour, bravery and recognition to victorious warriors and tribal chiefs.
The textile carries distinctive indigenous motifs, including the sun, moon, elephant and spear. Rani Devi has adapted the traditional craft into a refined Silk Innaphi while retaining its cultural and artistic significance.
Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla congratulated Rani Devi on the national recognition and said the award was a matter of pride for the state. He highlighted her dedication as a reflection of the skills and resilience of Manipur’s weaving community.
Women account for around 95 per cent of the workforce in Manipur’s handloom sector. The state has an estimated 2.44 lakh weavers and artisans, who continue to sustain and promote its traditional textile and weaving practices.
