Imphal: The working committee of the Joint Tribes Council Manipur (JTCM) has announced an indefinite ban on goods-carrying vehicles along national highways passing through Inpui, Liangmai, Rongmei and Zeme areas, citing the state governmentโ€™s alleged inaction over the killing of six Naga men and the August 20 crackdown by security forces on demonstrators in Kangpokpi district.

In a statement, the council said protests in Kangpokpi turned violent on August 20 after security forces used tear gas against demonstrators, leaving several people injured.

The council expressed frustration that the case, which has been transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), has not yet led to the identification of those responsible.

The JTCM also accused state and Central forces of bias, alleging that security operations had disproportionately targeted Naga Village Guards based on unverified reports.

It further alleged that villagers continue to face security threats from armed groups, while local defence volunteers face interference from the authorities.

The working committee urged regional coordination units and local bodies to enforce the ban peacefully. It warned that the agitation would intensify if the authorities fail to address the communityโ€™s demands for safety and justice.
