Guwahati: The curfew was relaxed in the entire Jiribam Municipal area on Wednesday since its imposition on June 6, 2024, in the whole area situated within the revenue jurisdiction of Jiribam District, Manipur following the killing of a person in a firing incident and subsequent violence, officials said.

Soon after the relaxation was announced on Wednesday morning, shops and business establishments opened, and public and private transport resumed, giving semblance of normalcy. Long queues were witnessed outside ATMs and shops dealing with essential commodities like milk and vegetables besides other daily use items, officials said.

The officials further said police and security personnel remained deployed in strength in sensitive areas as a precautionary measure as prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC are being enforced strictly to maintain law and order.

Th. Manoranjan Singh, Additional District Magistrate, Jiribam, in a notification, informed the general public that the restriction of movement of persons outside their respective residences imposed in Jiribam Municipal area was relaxed from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on 19th June 2024 within the jurisdiction of Jiribam Municipal Council.

The relaxation was, however, not applied to any gathering/large-scale movement of persons/sit-in-protests/rallies, etc. which is unlawful.

The District Magistrate has issued Prohibitory Orders under Sub-Section 2 of Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 restricting the movement of persons outside their respective residences since the 6th of June, 2024.

There is the necessity to relax the restriction of movement to facilitate the general public to purchase essential items Including medicines and food items, etc.
