Imphal: A 52-year-old India Reserve Battalion (IRB) jawan, reportedly died by suicide in Thoubal, Manipur.

Md Zafar Ali tragically took his own life by shooting himself with his service rifle inside the strong room of the District Commissioner’s Office in Thoubal, Manipur, on Wednesday morning.

The incident occurred at approximately 8:40 am, while other IRB personnel were participating in a parade rehearsal for the upcoming Independence Day celebrations.

Upon hearing a gunshot, security guards and fellow jawans rushed to the scene, where they found Md Zafar Ali’s body with a fatal head wound.

An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident, as no suicide note was found at the scene.

Md Zafar Ali, a resident of Sangaiyumpham Part I in Thoubal district, was posted at Wanging and was on duty at the strong room from 8 am to 10 am.

A team from the Thoubal police station, assisted by forensic experts, has conducted an inquest and collected evidence, including the service rifle and an empty cartridge.

The cause of Md Zafar Ali’s actions remains unknown, pending further investigation.
