Guwahati: Thousands of residents in Imphal East and West districts in Manipur are homeless after floodwaters surged through their neighbourhoods on Wednesday.

Three major rivers – Imphal, Iril, and Kongba – breached their embankments at seven locations on Tuesday night, inundating low-lying areas like Kshetrigao Awang Leikai, Kongpak, Thambalkhong, and Singjamei Waikhom Leikai.

The floodwaters have severely impacted the assembly constituencies of Singjamei, Thongju, Langthabal, and Kshetrigao. Residents in low-lying areas of Singjamei are facing the worst of the situation.

State Disaster Response Forces, Manipur Fire Services, Manipur Mountaineering and Trekking Association, and local clubs are actively involved in rescue operations. Authorities have cut off electricity in flooded zones as a safety precaution.

Over 10,000 people, including senior citizens, women, and children, have been evacuated to safer areas. Flood relief camps have been set up in Ningom Thonjao and Kshetrigao to provide shelter and assistance.
