Imphal: Hundreds from the Naga community took part in the “Save the Peace” rally organized by the Tangkhul Shanao Long (Tangkhu Women’s League) with Tangkhul Katamnao Long, a student union of the Tangkhul Naga community in Ukhrul, Manipur on Friday.

The solidarity march was organised to protest against the government for its imposition of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), border fencing, and restrictions on the Free Movement Regime (FMR).

The march commenced from two locations — Kharasom Junction in Ukhrul and Dungrei Junction in Hungpung — and converged at Wino Bazaar, the town centre, where a public meeting was held.

Participants carried banners and placards with messages  “Respect the Unique History of the Naga People,” “Save the Peace,” and “Nagas Are Not Lost People.”

Enoli Priscilla Thiumai, President of the Naga Women’s Union (NWU) during the rally called for the repeal of AFSPA, condemning it as a “draconian law” that perpetuates human rights abuses.

Vareiyo Shatsang, General Secretary of the United Naga Council (UNC), said that the border fencing projects are an infringement on traditional rights and cross-border ties among Naga communities living in India and Myanmar.

The march concluded with a collective pledge against challenges posed by AFSPA, border fencing, and FMR restrictions.
