A three-day programme called ‘Discover North East – A Cultural Yatra’ was formally inaugurated at the indoor stadium of Chandel district headquarters, about 65 km south of Imphal in Manipur in Tuesday.

The programme was organized by North East Zone Cultural Centre (NEZCC), Ministry of Culture, Government of India and the Department of Art & Culture, Government of Manipur in collaboration of district administration, Chandel and district administration of Kakching.

Deputy Commissioner Krishna Kumar of Chandel district, former chief executive officer T S Kothar Monsang of Autonomous District Council Chandel, and program officer NEZCC Oliver attended the inaugural function.

Speaking on the occasion, deputy commissioner Krishna Kumar said that it’s big opportunity for the district to witness different cultural troops from different parts of the country. He opined that our country is a unique example of unity in diversity.

Sighting example of the cultural troops present he said, there are so many different cultural dance troops, diversity is there but still we are one, and further said today’s event itself is the showcase of our country’s uniqueness, that is, unity in diversity

In his introductory speech, programme officer NEZCC Oliver said that NEZCC started working in the year 1987, with the objective to preserve, innovate promote ,for projection and dissemination of the arts of the north-eastern region and also to develop the rich diversity and uniqueness of various arts, and also to upgrade and enrich the consciousness of the people of their cultural heritage and to make special effort and works on tribal arts and to frame special programmes, for its preservation including documentation and promote various vanishing and dying art form of the region.

Tuesday’s programme was participated by various cultural troops from different parts of the country including troops from West Bengal, Assam,Tripura, Jammu and Kashmir, Arunachal Pradesh and many local cultural troops.

The second and third day’s programme will be held at Sugnu and Pallel on March 13 and 14 respectively.
