Imphal: The Manipur government on Monday issued an advisory to electronic, digital and social media platforms, directing them to ensure responsible dissemination of information and warning of strict action for violations.

In an order issued by the Commissioner (Home), the government expressed concern over the circulation of unverified, misleading and provocative content, including material attributed to banned or unauthorised groups, which it said could trigger panic and disturb public order.

Citing the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, the advisory requires digital publishers and intermediaries to exercise due diligence to prevent the spread of fake news, deepfakes and manipulated content. Platforms have been directed not to host or amplify unlawful material, including calls for bandhs, threats or activities that may disrupt normal life.

The government also stressed adherence to the prescribed Code of Ethics, underscoring the need for accuracy, fairness and respect for sovereignty and public order. Media outlets were cautioned against publishing sensational or inflammatory content, including misleading headlines and captions.

The advisory further mandates that platforms establish grievance redressal mechanisms and extend cooperation to law enforcement agencies.

Officials warned that non-compliance could invite action under the Information Technology Act, 2000, including the withdrawal of safe-harbour protections.
