Imphal: Reaffirming its commitment to environmental conservation, the Manipur government has intensified its focus on protecting natural resources while pursuing economic growth, with the Environment Department continuing to observe key global environmental days throughout the year.

Principal Secretary (Forest, Environment & Climate Change) Arun Kumar Sinha, IAS, attended the programme as the Chief Guest, while Dr T. Brajakumar Singh, Director of Environment & Climate Change, presided over the function.

Speaking on the occasion, Arun Kumar Sinha said the department observes several major environmental days annually, beginning with World Wetlands Day in February, followed by World Water Day (March), World Earth Day (April), International Day for Biological Diversity (May), World Environment Day (June), World Nature Conservation Day (July), International Day of the Worldโ€™s Indigenous Peoples (August), World Ozone Day (September) and International Mountain Day (December).

He added that the newly released calendar reflects the stateโ€™s ecological richness and highlights these key observances. The calendar features Dzuko Valley in January, a hill water body in Tamenglong in February, the Barak River in March, the spring landscape in April, and migratory birds across Manipurโ€™s wetlands in May. Sinha informed that Manipur has developed 71 wetlands, of which three are officially notified and four are under rejuvenation, with conservation efforts continuing actively.

He further said the June calendar page highlights terrace farming as a climate-resilient agricultural practice along with World Environment Day. The September page reflects the two-day Indian Himalayan Region Climate Change Conclave, while October marks Indiaโ€™s participation in the global โ€˜Right to a Healthy Environmentโ€™ initiative. November showcases the Governorโ€™s participation in the conclave and December highlights modern western Manipur ecosystems alongside International Mountain Day. Together, these themes shape the 2026 environmental calendar.

Concluding his address, Sinha urged all stakeholders to work collectively for environmental preservation to ensure that future generations do not suffer due to depleted natural resources. He also extended New Year greetings to everyone present. Officials and staff of the Directorate also attended the programme.
