Imphal: Governor of Manipur Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Wednesday released the second edition of the coffee table book ‘The Life of the Unsung Hero – Major Ralengnao ‘Bob’ Khathing’ during a ceremony held at Valley View, Imphal. Before the release, the Governor laid a wreath at the memorial of Major Ralengnao ‘Bob’ Khathing at the venue.
Ralengnao Khathing (1912–1990), also known as Bob Khathing, was an Indian soldier, civil servant, and diplomat, and the first person of tribal origin from Manipur’s Ukhrul district to serve as an ambassador for India.
The Government of India honoured him in 1957 with the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award, for his services to the nation. Khathing led the first armed forces into Tawang, establishing Indian control in the region under the direct supervision of the then Assam Governor, Jairamdas Daulatram.
Wednesday’s ceremony was attended by John S. R. Khathing, Indian Revenue Service (Retd.); Major General Gaurav Sharma, Inspector General of Assam Rifles (South); Major General Subhankar Basu, General Officer Commanding (GOC), 57th Mountain Division; along with other senior officers and family members of Major Khathing.
As part of the event, the Major Ralengnao ‘Bob’ Khathing Meritorious Awards were distributed to students who excelled in the Class X and XII examinations.
Addressing the ceremony, the Governor stated that the second edition of the coffee table book on Major Ralengnao ‘Bob’ Khathing goes beyond recounting the life of an extraordinary son of the state, serving as a reflection of the enduring values of courage, integrity, and selfless service that underpin nation-building. He highlighted Major Khathing’s distinguished journey as a soldier, administrator, and diplomat.
The Governor further emphasised that Major Khathing’s life carries a profound message for the younger generation, urging them to draw inspiration from his discipline, humility, and commitment to the greater good.
He underscored that the nation’s future depends on youth dedicated to unity, constructive dialogue, and peace, noting that lasting progress is built on collective effort and mutual understanding, and expressed hope that the book will inspire them to contribute to a peaceful, united, and prosperous society.
