Imphal: Former Acting Chairperson of the Manipur-based Pambei-led United National Liberation Front (UNLF), who was on a two-wheeler, escaped with minor injuries, while his wife lost her life after being hit from behind by a speeding car.
The UNLF-P is currently under a peace pact with the government.
Moirangthem Joy, alias Joyjao or Nongyai (64), and his wife, Moirangthem (Ongbi) Jibanlata Leima (56), were returning home on a two-wheeler (Activa) on Wednesday night, officials reported on Friday. The driver and occupants of the car fled the scene after the incident.
The accident occurred at Thongju Boroi Makhong crossing along National Highway-102 (Imphal-Moreh road), Imphal West, under the jurisdiction of Singjamei police station.
Following an investigation into the hit-and-run case, in which a woman from Thongju Nepram Leirak, Imphal West District, was killed and her husband injured, the Manipur Police arrested three individuals reportedly involved in the crime.
The arrestees have been identified as Davidson Thokchom (23) of Bashikhong, Roberson Naorem (24) of Naorem Leikai, Liwa Lambi, and Rohit Okram (23) of Singjamei Chingamakha, all residents of Imphal West district..
The vehicle involved, a silver ALTO K-10 bearing registration number MN-06L-6869, has been recovered.
The police reported that further investigation is ongoing.
