Manipur faces artificial scarcity of essential commodities

Imphal: Amidst the crippling impact of the protracted violent crisis on the economy in Manipur, prices of almost all essential commodities including rice have soared to the limits.

The artificial price rise allegedly continued at the hands of the business sharks and political leaders in Imphal city owing to the bandhs and blockades on the National Highways passing to this mendicant state during the past few days.

To combat the artificial skyrocketed prices of daily items, the Volunteers of Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) students’ wing and Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF) decided to take out drives against commercial activities in Imphal city.

During the drives, the volunteers found many wholesale stores selling imported goods at a higher price than the Government fixed.

To this effect, 20 stores were shut down for good during the drive.

MSF president Hijam Roshan said that more drives would be continued in the coming days.

He also urged the Government to take action against all who violate the Essential Commodities Act.

The price of locally produced rice was earlier sold at Rs 56 per kg in the market and now it is available at Rs 65 per kg.

The prices of imported items such as rice, potato, onion, and egg besides LPG cylinders and petrol are being sold at rates much above the ones fixed by the government.
