Imphal: The principal of the Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) at Zeikhuluang Loktak Project in Manipur has been relieved of his duties after allegations of food shortages and poor living conditions at the residential school sparked widespread concern.
The action came on August 3 after reports alleged that students had been facing an acute shortage of food and other essential supplies, with some reportedly going without proper meals for days. The allegations prompted calls for immediate intervention from the state government and the concerned authorities.
According to reports, the situation at the school had deteriorated to the point where several students were allegedly left hungry, while some were seen in tears over the lack of adequate food. Videos circulating on social media also purportedly showed students receiving medical treatment after complaining of weakness, further intensifying public concern.
The school functions under the Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) scheme, which aims to provide free quality education, boarding, and other facilities to tribal students.
In response to the allegations, the Manipur Society for Tribal Educational Institution (MSTEI) under the Tribal Affairs and Hills Department issued an order relieving the principal of EMRS Loktak from his responsibilities with immediate effect.
The order, issued with the approval of the competent authority, stated that the principal has been transferred and attached to the office of the Member Secretary, MSTEI, until further orders. It also noted that the latest directive supersedes all previous orders related to the matter.
The administrative action follows mounting criticism over the reported lack of food and essential facilities at the school. Concerned individuals and organisations have urged the Tribal Affairs and Hills Department to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the allegations and fix accountability for any lapses.
They have also called on the authorities to ensure that students receive adequate food, healthcare, accommodation and other basic amenities, while taking immediate corrective measures to safeguard their health, welfare and well-being.
