Imphal: A Fast Track Special Court in Manipur on Thursday sentenced two men to 25 years of rigorous imprisonment for the gang rape of a minor girl.
The Special Judge of Fast Track Special Court No. 1 convicted Dayananda Heikrujam (38) and Sagolshem Sanahal (37) under Section 376(D) of the Indian Penal Code and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on each of them. The court also ordered that the period already spent by the convicts in custody be set off against the sentence.
The two men, residents of Uchiwa Leirak Achouba in Imphal West district, were arrested on December 10, 2021, in connection with the case.
According to the prosecution, a complaint was lodged at the Imphal West Womenโs Police Station stating that the complainantโs minor daughter had been sexually assaulted on September 1, 2021, inside a departmental store while she was asleep. The complaint alleged that the accused had threatened the victim with consequences if she disclosed the incident. The victim later informed her mother about the assault.
During the investigation, the victimโs statement was recorded under Section 161 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. The prosecution stated that the two convicts sexually assaulted the victim while another unidentified person kept watch near the back door of the store.
In a related order, the court directed the State Government to pay Rs 8 lakh as compensation to the victim and her family under the Victim Compensation Fund or any other applicable scheme under Section 357A of the CrPC. The compensation is to be disbursed within 30 days of receipt of the order.
