Imphal: The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) has extended its 48-hour shutdown in Sadar Hills of Manipurโs Kangpokpi district by another 24 hours, citing the state government’s failure to trace two missing Kuki civilians.
The extension, announced on Saturday, pushes the shutdown deadline from 5 pm on Saturday to midnight on Sunday.
In a statement issued through its Department of Information and Publicity at the Kangpokpi district headquarters, CoTU said the decision was taken due to the lack of satisfactory progress by state authorities in locating the missing individuals.
The two missing youths have been identified as Thangginlun Chongloi and Paoginlal Hangsing, who reportedly went missing on Wednesday. According to reports cited by the committee, Naga militants allegedly abducted them from the area between Hengbung and Taphou Kuki village.
Describing the government’s response as inadequate, CoTU said the continued delay in securing the safe recovery of the two civilians had caused serious concern within the affected community.
The organisation urged residents to strictly observe the extended shutdown while maintaining peace and discipline. It also called on state security agencies to prioritise efforts to locate the missing youths and ensure justice.
CoTU further warned that it would launch sustained and coordinated democratic protests across Sadar Hills and adjoining border areas if the authorities failed to resolve the matter within the extended 24-hour period.
