In yet another setback for the Congress in Manipur ahead of the Assembly elections in the state, senior party leader D Korungthang has resigned as an MLA.

According to reports, D Korungthang is likely to quit the Congress and join the Naga People’s Front (NPF) in the next couple of days.

Notably, NPF is an ally of the BJP in the coalition government in Manipur.

D Korungthang’s move to step down as an MLA comes just months before Manipur goes to Assembly elections.

Korungthang was elected from the Tengnoupal Assembly constituency in the 2017 elections held in Manipur.

On December 29, senior NPP leader and Manipur minister Letpao Haokip had quit the party and joined the BJP.

Interestingly, according to reports, Haokip too is mulling to contest the upcoming Manipur Assembly elections from Tengnoupal constituency.

Meanwhile, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) has removed Korungthang as Manipur Congress working president and also suspended him for “anti-party activities”.
