As the first edition of Khelo India School Games comes to an end, Manipur flies high with a total of 34 medals, including 13 gold, 13 silver and 8 bronze medals to its name.

The games held at New Delhi under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, saw Manipur emerge as the 5th rank holders under various categories.

The state team was lead by T Thouba, Assistant Director of Youth Affairs and Sports as chef de mission and Tomba, District Youth Affairs and Sports Officer, Tamenglong district as deputy chef de mission.

On the last day of the sports extravaganza, Manipur’s Meiraba Luwang beat Akash Yadav of Uttar Pradesh to fetch gold in the boy’s category of the badminton event.

The second gold medal in the state was won by Th Tababi in the 44kg category of the judo event. Ch Rebina won the gold medal in the 57kg category of the same event.

Another silver medal was won by M Bidyashwari in the 44kg category for girls. In the 66kg category for boys, Th Abungcha gained a silver medal.

Joyshree Devi (52kg), Ch Julia (70kg), and L Sanathoi (70kg) also bagged the bronze medal in judo for the state.

The hopeful women’s football team from the state however had to settle for silver as they lost to Haryana 4-5 in a high scoring match.

The boxing categories of 54kg and 57kg saw Manipuri boxers Sanathoi Hemam and Ashalata Chanu respectively, clinch the gold medal.

Other boxers Tinmila Doungel (48kg), Babyrosisana Chanu (52kg), Alena Devi (60kg), Meneka Devi (63kg), Sanamacha Chanu (70kg) and Ambeshwari Huidrom bagged silver medals each for the state. A bronze medal was also added by M Puja to the impressive roster of medals from Manipur.

Nongdamkhomba (60kg) and N Bobosana (63kg) also bagged silver medals for the boy’s category of boxing.

Weightlifter Arambam Anita Devi (69kg) went on to win the gold medal after lifting a total of 175kg.

And finally, another bronze medal was added by  Suchitra Tourangbam in archery to the already impressive tally of medals by adding up a total of 142 points.
