Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Sunday applauded weightlifter Mirbai Chanu for winning a bronze medal at the Asia Weightlifting Championships at Tashkent in Uzbekistan.

The 26-year-old Manipuri athlete set the world record in clean and jerk by lifting 119 kg at the championships.

Chanu also made a record at the national level by lifting a snatch 86 kg and clean and jerk in 119 kg, which amounts to 205 kg.

The young athlete was also honored with the Padma Shri and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award for her contributions to sports.

Chanu hails from Imphal in Manipur.
