Imphal: Asserting that a society divided along ethnic lines can never achieve sustainable growth, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh stressed that mutual respect and inter-community unity are essential for the progress of Manipur.
He called on Meiteis, Nagas, Kukis, and all other groups to bridge trust deficits and strengthen mutual understanding.
The boundaries and identity of Manipur are a shared legacy inherited from our forefathers,โ Khemchand stated, stating that the state’s territorial integrity was collectively shaped and safeguarded by all communities.
Khemchand made the remarks while inaugurating the newly constructed Girlsโ Hostel at the Mission Blind School in Heikakpokpi, Tengnoupal district, a facility designed to improve accommodation and educational opportunities for visually impaired students.
Addressing a diverse gathering, he noted that seven of the state’s 36 recognized communities reside in the Heikakpokpi area, making it a microcosm of the state’s diversity.
He warned that if people identify solely with their specific communities and remain divided, the vision of a prosperous Manipur will remain unattainable.
Reflecting on the ethnic conflict that disrupted the state, the Chief Minister confirmed that representatives from various organizations, including Kuki and Naga groups, are engaging in active dialogue to restore normalcy.
He expressed optimism that this ongoing dialogue at the Chief Ministerโs Bungalow is creating a conducive atmosphere for reconciliation.
Drawing a parallel to historical diplomatic efforts after World War II, Khemchand reiterated that violence and confrontation can never provide lasting solutions, and that complex conflicts are ultimately resolved only through negotiations.
Referring to the broader consequences of prolonged unrest, the Chief Minister noted severe setbacks to the stateโs economy and the educational future of thousands of students.
He concluded with a strong appeal for all sections of society to move beyond resentment and unite in safeguarding peace and stability.
