2021 IWF World Weightlifting Championship

Indian weightlifter from Manipur, S Bindyarani Devi has brought laurels to the country by winning the first gold medal for the country at the ongoing 2021 IWF World Weightlifting Championship in Uzbekistan’s Tashkent.

She won the gold medal in the women’s 55-kg Clean & Jerk.

The 22-year-old weightlifter’s lift of 114 kg has earned Bindyarani Devi the first spot in the Clean and Jerk category as she finished a creditable 4th overall with a total of 198 kgs (84+114kg).

According to a media report, the overall gold medal went at 203 kgs and Bindyarani was placed at 9th in the Snatch category with the best lift of 84 Kg.

Bindyarani, who was called ‘Mirabai 2.0’ in the past, comes from a similar background and the same state and club.

There are also many similarities between young lifter Bindyarani and Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu, said the report.

The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has confirmed Bindyarani’s win on its official Twitter handle.

“1st First gold medal for India at IWF World Championships 2021. S. Bindyarani Devi wins GOLD in Clean & Jerk category with a lift of 114kg in Women’s 55kg event, finishing 4th overall. Great effort by Bindyarani. Many congratulations,” SAI tweeted.

The DoNER Ministry has also congratulated Bidyarani for her achievement.
