The JD (U), under the leadership of its new national president Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh, is working hard to revive its lost support base in Manipur and other states of the northeast region, TOI reported.

“The party under the guidance of Lalan Singh has planned a mega rally on December 18 in East Imphal district to make its presence felt in Manipur state ahead of the 2022 assembly polls, likely to be held in March next year,” TOI quoted JD(U) Manipur state president Hangkhanpao Taithul as saying.

He said as this year’s delayed harvesting season in Manipur would be over by December 15 and there would be a festive season ahead of Christmas, the party expects a massive turnout of people at the mega rally, which would be led by Lalan Singh.

Taithul said Lalan Singh and other national leaders of JD(U) would reach Imphal on December 17 to participate in the rally.

Currently, the JD(U) has only one MLA in Arunachal Pradesh in the Northeast.

It has no MLA in any other state of the region. The party won seven of the 15 seats it contested in the 2019 assembly elections in Arunachal Pradesh and emerged as the second-largest party after the BJP, which had bagged 41 seats.

However, its six of seven MLAs jumped ship and joined BJP in December 2020, leaving the JD (U) with only one MLA in the Northeastern state.
