Imphal: Assam Rifles in Manipur with the firing of two 51 mm mortar bombs, intervened in the exchanges of gunfire between two warring groups in and around the Lalpani Part I and Mongbung Seijang villages under the Jiribam police station on Friday night.
When one of the bombs exploded and another misfired, the trading gunfires stopped.

During the exchange of gunfire, one house belonging to one Yumkhaibam Joykumar, 45, a resident of Lalpani part I was set on fire reducing it to ashes.
The incident occurred at around 7 pm on Friday, the police said on Saturday.

At around 9 am on Saturday, the bomb experts of the Assam Rifles came to the residence of one Sanahal Haq, 46, son of Jamir Ali, a resident of Lalpani Part I.
They retrieved the misfired explosive in the presence of many villagers and went back, Md Bahauddin, president of the All Jiribam Muslim Welfare Society told the media.

Regarding the gunbattle between two warring groups, Md Bahauddin appealed to the responsible individuals/groups not to repeat such acts in their village in the future.
He said that they would set up village defence forces in their community to defend themselves from the two warring parties.
