Manipur: Areca nuts worth Rs 74.52 crore seized

Imphal: The Assam Rifles in Manipur intercepted 53 trucks carrying 10,855 bags of smuggled areca nuts worth around Rs 74.52 crore in the international markets.

The confiscations of the items were carried out in four separate operations across the Tengnoupal district of Manipur with Myanmar in the south.

This was the largest seizure of this year and was conducted under the overall supervision of the Headquarters Inspector General of Assam Rifles (South).

A statement issued by the defence wing stated that based on reliable intelligence, the first operation in Narum led to the seizure of 3,400 bags of areca nuts, valued at Rs 23 crore.

In Sita Village, 255 bags weighing approximately 20,400 kg and valued at Rs 1.76 crore were confiscated.

Another operation in RRC Village recovered 400 bags, totalling 32,000 kg and worth Rs 2.76 crore.

The largest haul was at LamlongKhunou, where 6,800 bags weighing 5,44,000 kg, with an estimated value of Rs 47 crore, were seized.

It is also reported that a total of 53 truck drivers were also detained in this clandestine business.

The statement added that all confiscated goods had been handed over to the Forest Department in Imphal for legal action.
