IMPHAL: A team of the Assam Rifles foiled an alleged cross-border smuggling attempt and apprehended seven suspected smugglers in Kamjong, Manipur which shares a border with Myanmar.

Sources said that approximately 1701 cubic feet of timber, valued at Rs 14.45 lakh in the regional grey market was seized during the operation.

The timber was being transported from Myanmar into Manipur through its porous borders, officials said on Tuesday.

The officials added that the security forces during its routine search operation in the region of Z Choro village, intercepted seven trucks bearing Indian registration.

These trucks were allegedly involved in the illegal transportation of timber and all of them lacked valid documentation.

Upon thorough inspection, the timber was seized by the team.

The timber along with the suspected smugglers were nabbed immediately.

They were later handed over to the Forest Beat Officer of Kamjong District. 

It may be mentioned that a total of 24120 CFT of timber worth Rs 2.05 crore was confiscated in Kamjong since April 1, 2024 till date.
