Imphal: Manipur government authorities have actively sealed numerous ultrasound centres across various districts in 2025 for violating the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PC&PNDT) Act, 1994.
The primary aim of these actions is to prevent illegal sex determination and address the declining sex ratio.
Dr. Sujata Huidrom, State Nodal Officer (SNO), PC-PNDT, while speaking at the state-level media sensitisation workshop on pre-conception and prenatal diagnostic techniques (PC&PNDT) held on Wednesday, stated that licenses of 12 ultrasound centres were cancelled in 2025 for violating the PC&PNDT Act by determining the gender of fetuses.
Following this, the health department suspended licenses of 44 ultrasound centres, all belonging to private hospitals, and issued show-cause notices to others for deficiencies in implementing the PC&PNDT Act.
There are a total of 183 ultrasound centres in the state.
The private hospitals were sealed after investigations revealed that unauthorised personnel were conducting tests without patient consent forms and for failing to submit mandatory “Form F” documents.
Regarding gender determination and illegal tests to determine the sex of fetuses, Dr. Sujata stated that the Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB), based on registered births between January and November 2025, presents a concerning picture in the state.
The officer added that the state recorded a sex ratio of 1,000 males per 932 females during this period.
