Manipur 1.56 lakh Kg of fish sold at annual fair

Imphal: Manipur surpassed fish production with 1.56 lakh kilograms against the target of 1.5 lakh kg this year.

State fishery director H Balkrisna Singh said that the state Fisheries Department had a target of 1,50,000 kg of fish on sale at the 45th Fish Fair cum Fish Crop Competition 2024.

But, it turned out to be even better with 1,56,000 kg of fish being sold, he said.

The production surpassed the target by 6,000 kgs in the annual competition.

Imphal West district produced 47,545 kgs of fish, the highest production among the valley districts. Among the hill districts, Chandel produced the highest with 2770 kgs of fish.

In the competition, a fish farmer namely Salam Lokendro of Imphal West won the first prize of Rs 1 lakh.

He produced 43,765 kgs of fish in the competition.

In addition to this, he was presented Rs 20, 000 for winning the first prize in the indigenous fish category competition by producing 9,735 kgs of indigenous fish.

Ningthoujam Basanta Singh of Bishnupur district and Laimujam Dinamani, Thoubal district won the second and third prizes for producing 17,462 kgs and 17,366 Kgs of fish.

They were presented cash rewards of Rs 70,000 and Rs 50,000 respectively.

Moreover, 20 other fish farmers were also honored with consolation prizes of Rs 20, 000 each.

Around 250 fish farmers from across the state participated in the competition.

Fish is a staple food in the diet of Manipur with 95% of its population depending on it as a source of protein.

Manipur annually requires 53,000 MT of fish against the production of 33,000 MT.
