Soso Lorho

Former Manipur minister and Naga leader Soso Lorho passed away after a prolonged illness late last night at a private hospital in Imphal.

He was 79 and survived by his children and grandchildren.

A condolence service was organized at his Chingmeirong Poumai colony residence, Sangakpham in Imphal this morning. Many ministers, MLAs, Ex-MLAs, leaders of various political parties, civil society organizations, friends attended the condolence service.

Most of the speakers in the day’s condolence services include former legislators AS Arthur, RK Thekho, Francis Ngajokpa. They shared their feelings and experiences.

According to family sources, the dead body of the Naga leader will be taken to Senapati district headquarters, 60km north of Imphal for another condolence service during the day and moved towards it’s native village-Tunggam under Paomata sub-division in the district for the last rites and necessary religious programme scheduled to be held on Saturday.

Son of the late D Sousou, Soso Lorho was the general secretary of Paomata Naga students Union from 1962-64 and general secretary of Paomata Naga Progressive Union from 1967-75. He contested from Manipur outer parliamentary constituency as the first Congress (I) candidate in 1978.He was elected from Manipur Legislative assembly in 1980 from Mao constituency on congress(I) and became Medical, power, cooperation and statistics department minister.

He was re-elected in 1985 on congress ticket and became the Agriculture, works and tribal development minister. He was also re-elected in 1990 and became Minister of state. He became the president of Manipur Pradesh Indira Congress Committee(T) in 1996 and president of Naga People’s Front(NPF) Manipur from 2012-14 and contested Lok Sabha polls in 2014 on NPF ticket. He was the convenor of Manipur Naga political leaders forum till date.
