Troops of Assam Rifles in Manipur have seized an illegal timber-laden truck at Shangshak Junction under Ukhrul district on Tuesday

“On receipt of a credible input from reliable sources, an MVCP (mobile vehicle check post) was established at Shangshak Junction at around 9.30 pm on September 8,” PRO Assam Rifles (South) said in a press release.

“At approximately 10 pm, one TATA truck bearing registration number MN-05-3905 driven by one Athokpam Lukhoi Meitei (52), a resident of Imphal -East District was intercepted.” it said.

On carrying out thorough checking of the documents and vehicle, the truck was found carrying 460 cubic feet of Pinewood and Uchan wood logs without valid permit for the same, the release stated.

The total value of the smuggled timber is approximately Rs 4.5 lakh, it added.

The truck was moving towards Imphal from Singcha village.

Shangshak police station was contacted and the timber along with the vehicle and the driver have been handed over to Shangshak police station for further action at 8.45 am on Wednesday, it said.

In another development, troops of Assam Rifles conducted tree plantation drives in the areas of Lamdan, Kom Keirap and Tokpa Khunao on Wednesday, the release said.

The tree plantation programme was conducted with an aim to contribute towards a greener Manipur drive, fighting against the effects of green house gases, global warming and also to provide a better environment for the next generations.
