A Major-rank official of the Assam Rifles has been arrested after allegedly shot dead a villager in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on Friday night.
AR Major Alok Sathe was arrested on Saturday after the 26-year-old victim took the officer’s name in his dying declaration, TOI reported.
The victim has been identified as Mangboilal Lhouvum, a resident of Chalwa village under the Kangpokpi police station.
Major Alok Sathe allegedly without any provocation opened fire on Lhouvum.
The AR official was “off duty” when he opened fire on the villager, who was a daily wage earner and father of two children.
Sathe, attached to Assam Rifles’ 44th Battalion, is the commander of the paramilitary force’s Gelnel village post.
Following the incident, angry villagers stormed the Assam Rifles camp at Gelnel village.
The irate mob allegedly destroyed two AK 47 rifles, two vehicles and other camp materials and dragged out the Major and handed him over to the Manipur police.
