Imphal: Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey inaugurated a photo gallery of Manipur’s cinema and toured the S.N. Chand Cine Archive and Museum housed within the Palace Auditorium, Imphal, on Saturday.
The museum showcases a collection of archival works from Manipuri cinema, including films and photographs of prominent personalities in the state’s film industry.
The celebration coincides with the 50th anniversary of Manipuri cinema. “Matamgi Manipur,” directed by Debkumar Bose, holds the distinction of being the first Manipuri film.
Debuting in 1972, the movie garnered a President’s Silver Medal for Best Regional Film at the 20th National Film Awards.
Governor Uikey commended Manipuri cinema’s resilience, evolving from 35mm black and white films to the significant role video has played in recent decades.
She also highlighted the Manipur State Film Awards, established in 1984, as a cornerstone of the state’s cinematic landscape.
Inspired by the National Film Awards, these accolades recognize excellence across various categories, fostering diverse talents and contributions within the industry.
The establishment of the S.N. Chand Cine Archive and Museum marks a historic milestone in this golden jubilee year.
Named after S.N. Chand, a pioneer and the first Manipuri director to release a feature film, “Brojendragee Luhongba” (shot in 1971 and released in 1973), the archive serves the crucial purpose of conserving and preserving Manipur’s cinematic heritage, solidifying the state’s position as a thriving film hub.
