23-year-old weightlifter from Manipur Mirabai Chanu, has managed to steer clear of the doping scandals that has plagued the country in the past. Surprisingly she has been subjected to around 45 dope tests in the last four years.
Mirabai Chanu made sure weighlifting did not go unnoticed when she won India’s first World Championship gold medal in a long time. On November 30, Chanu won women’s 48 kg category gold at the World Championship in Anaheim, USA. She became the first Indian in 22 years after Olympic bronze-medallist Karnam Malleswari to attain this feat.

Chanu said “I have been tested so many times in the past two years but nothing has come out. Whenever they ask me to give a sample, I do it without hesitation because I have nothing to hide. I am only bothered about my training and looking forward to doing well at next year’s Commonwealth and Asian Games,”.
However even her moment in the sun did not spare her and she was subjected to two dope tests in two days after returning from the world championship. She was also criticized for not winning a medal at the Rio Olympics. Instead of deterring her, this incident bolstered her to perform better.
