Imphal: Security forces have arrested an active cadre of the banned United National Liberation Front (UNLF-Koireng group) ahead of the outfit’s 9th “Martyrs’ Memorial Day.”
Police said on Tuesday that the accused, identified as Thangjam Dhamendra Singh alias Wayenba alias Volume (26), a resident of Leirongthel Pitra in Thoubal district, was apprehended from the Yairipok Bazar area under Yairipok police station limits. He was allegedly involved in the illegal trade and trafficking of arms and ammunition.
During the arrest, police recovered a 9 mm magazine, a mobile phone with two SIM cards, a power bank with a USB cable and an ATM card from his possession.
The arrest comes ahead of the UNLF-K’s 9th “Martyrs’ Memorial Day,” which was observed in a low-key manner across various locations in the region.
Meanwhile, the UNLF (K) said in a statement issued by its publicity secretary M. Shak-Hen that due to the prevailing situation, the memorial day could not be observed publicly.
Instead, it was held at its central headquarters, district and branch committees, External Affairs headquarters, LAKSA (External Affairs) and at various units of the Manipur People’s Army (MPA), the group’s armed wing.
The observance included flying the party flag at half-mast from 5 am to 5 pm, a two-minute silence, floral tributes to martyrs and addresses by party leaders at different levels.
