Manipur University Students’ Union (MUSU) which have been spearheading continuous agitation demanding the removal of Vice Chancellor Prof Adya Prasad Pandey for his alleged financial and administrative irregularities since May 30, has announced that they will disturb the ongoing assembly session.
President M Dayaman of MUSU who made the announcement during a press conference at university campus, conveyed it during a telephonic conversation last evening.
“We decided to take the step as the ongoing session of the state assembly failed to discuss and take a decision in connection with the ongoing university issue,” says Dayaman.
Many civil society organizations in the state also agreed to support the movement.
Manipur assembly which begins here on Friday will resume on Monday as a concluding session.
On the other hand MUSU leader lauded the support extended by the general public, civil society organization and other students’ bodies during the 48 hour strike which concluded on July 19 midnight.
Manipur University Teachers Association and Manipur University Staffs Association besides locals living around the University have been supporting the ongoing agitation of MUSU.
He however condemned the excess of the security forces during the torch rallies organized in connection with the ongoing protest at Uripok and Singjamei areas on July 19 night. Around 10 people were injured during the police action.
Appealing not to boycott the schools as boycotting schools may have a negative impact, he said the only solution to the ongoing crisis will be the removal of Vice Chancellor Prof Pandey.
On Friday three government higher secondary schools in Imphal staged a sit in demonstration demanding immediate end of the Manipur university crisis by removing Prof Pandey.
In another development, the senior state police officers appealed to the public not to encourage undemocratic forms of protests. The appeal was made by IGP (law and order) Clay Khongsai during a press conference in Imphal on Friday evening. The DIG Manipur police K Jayentakumar, SPs Jogeshchandra Haobijam(Imphal West) and K Meghachandra (Imphal East) also attended the press conference.
