Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Saturday said a fast track court would be established soon to tackle the drug menace and punish the drug smugglers and those who are associated with such businesses in the State.

The fast track court would replace the present Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) court to hear all the cases concerning to drug cases.

This was disclosed by Chief Minister N Biren Singh while addressing the fourth distribution of educational financial assistance for the children of widows’ of Langthabal constituency at Lilong Chajing Mairenkhong Community Hall in the outskirts of Imphal on Saturday. The function was organized by the Langthabal Kendra Widow’s Welfare Association.

The Chief Minister said a committee has been formed with Principal Secretary (Home) as chairman, an ADG as vice-chairman to tackle the issue of drug menace in the State.

He stated that IGs, DCs, SPs would be the members of the committee. An official order would be issued on Saturday, he added. He mentioned that such a committee would look into the rapidly growing menace of drugs abuse among young adults but also check the peddling and smuggling of drugs in the State. The committee would be able to track down the kingpin of the drug smuggling business in the State.

He said that a WhatsApp group has been formed to exchange the information and cases related to drug menace.

He said that he has been receiving photographs and reports of destroying the poppy plantation in Kangpokpi and Churachandpur area in the group.

Expressing serious concern over widespread poppy and cannabis plantation at different parts of the State, he asked the DCs, SPs and SDOs concerned to destroy all these plants within the month of March, 2018.

Appreciating the initiative taken up by Karam Shyam to help the widows, he said that the objective of such initiative is to bring positive change in the society.

The Chief Minister said that the essence of doing politics is to render human service with human touch towards bringing an inclusive development in the State. He said there would be no meaning of having good roads and infrastructure when we don’t have good education, livelihood etc to the people of the State.

“The present government is committed to bring an inclusive development in the State. So the government has undertaken many initiatives such as providing free diagnostics facilities at government hospitals, financial and welfare assistance to disabled and old aged people, health assurance scheme for the poor and disabled people etc,” he further said.

In his speech, State Minister for Consumer Affairs, Karam Shyam said that the objective of organizing such programme is to provide emotional and mental motivation among the widows and their children.

He believed that various leaders and well-wishers would also come forward to help the widows and their children living in the State.

The Minister further stressed that it is a simple gesture to help the widows and their children towards bringing inclusive development and positive changes in the State.

Mentioning about the struggles being faced by the widows, Minister Shyam said those children who knows the pains of a mother will succeed in their life. Commenting on the efforts and initiatives of the new government under the leadership of Chief Minister N Biren Singh, he said that a nation’s greatness depends on its leader.

Altogether a total of 495 children were selected for the educational financial assistance. The educational financial assistance is instituted by the donation of the ministers’ monthly salary and voluntary monetary donations from various well-wishers. MLA of Wangoi, O Lukhoi Singh, Adhyaksha of Imphal West Zila Parishad and the members were among others who attended the function.
