For the first time in its history, Sky Hospital successfully conducted a surgery on an only four months old child for a heart defect or a hole called Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) on November 18 last.

This was disclosed in a press statement signed by PRO, Sky Hospital and Research Centre Pvt Ltd, Aribam Roni and released to the media on Wednesday.

It stated that the patient, Kh Doyan, son of Kh Devan Singh from Khurai Chingangbam Leikai, Imphal East was brought to the Free Children Heart OPD on November 2 with recurrent cough, fever and breathlessness and chest infection.

Free Echocardiogram (heart scan) was provided to him on the same day which revealed the large PDA that have started to damage the heart in the form of dilatation of left ventricle (main chamber of the heart) and severe pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) which was 69 mmHg (normal range < 30>).

While informing that for such large PDA in such young age, device closure is risky and should not be attempted and surgical closure with ligation of the duct, along with trans-fixation is the only option to save his life, the release also mentioned that Kh Doyan remained on ventilator for 18 hours.

Kh Doyan recovered very well and was discharged to go home on day seven, and within two weeks of the operation, his PA pressure has reduced from 69 mmHg to 39 mmHg; and this will further reduce to normal range over the next few weeks, it stated.

Chairman and chief Cardiologist of Sky Hospital, Dr Lairikyengbam Shyamkishore expressed his happiness and satisfaction on the successful operation of the child while adding that SKY Hospital will provide surgical and non-surgical treatment for any child born with birth heart defects whose weight may be as low as 2.5 kg, the release added.
