Imphal: Two cadres of a valley-based insurgent outfit allegedly involved in extortion activities in Manipur have been arrested by a team of the newly-formed anti-extortion cell of the state police.

Based on a tip-off, the cadres, belonging to the proscribed People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK), were arrested on Saturday from a hideout near the Bir Tikendrajit International Airport in Imphal, the police said on Sunday.

A two-wheeler, two mobile handsets and a driving license were recovered from the possession of the militants identified as Haobijam Sanathoi Singh (18) aka Tomthin and Irungbam Nganba Meitei (34).

The arrests came after a complaint was received from an employee of an Imphal-based vehicle dealership stating that some unidentified miscreants had planted a bomb in their showroom.

These arrests were the first made by the newly-formed anti-extortion cell.

The anti-extortion cell, headed by the Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), was formed on Saturday in order to curb the growing menace of extortion in the state.
