Man arrested with firearms along Assam-Manipur border ahead of LS polls

Imphal: Ahead of the second phase Lok Sabha election for the Outer Manipur Parliamentary seat slated on April 26, security forces apprehended an individual on the charge of unauthorized possession of arms and ammunition during a routine frisking operation near the Leingangpokpi police gate in Manipur’s Jiribam district bordering Assam on the west on Tuesday, officials said on Wednesday.

Manipur police morning report states that the security forces arrested a 37-year-old man Lalson from Leingangpokpi Police Out Post Gate, Jiribam District.

One country-made Rifle with one magazine, one Rifle Butt, a mobile phone, a money bag containing Rs.13,120 and a multi-colour bag was recovered from his possession.

Close on the heels of his arrest and seizures of illegal items, the security forces launched search operations and area domination campaigns at Gangpijang Hill Range, Kangpokpi district.

The operation yielded the recovery of one Assault Rifle with one Magazine, one 12-inch Single Bore Barrel Gun, 23 Live Round ammunition, and five Fired Cartridge Cases.

The arrested person and seized items were handed over to the concerned police stations for legal proceedings, the report added.

Jiribam district of Manipur having an assembly constituency will go to the poll on April 26 and for Kangpokpi district the election ended on April 19.

The election results will be declared on June 4, 2024.
