A one-day awareness programme on ‘Gender based violence and crime against women and children in Manipur’ was held under the aegis of Manipur based Women Action for Development (WAD) at Takhel Sanjenbam High School in Nongpok Sanjenbam of Manipur’s Imphal East District on Wednesday.
The main objective of the awareness programme was to sensitize the students on the prevailing issues related with children and its legal mechanisms specially on Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, Protection of Children from Sexual Offence Act, 2012 (POCSO) and its root causes and impact on women and children in the society.

The programme began with welcome address from Konsam Balapati, principal of Takhel Sanjenbam High School. Programme coordinator Nomita Takhenchangbam of WAD gave a talk on ‘The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2006’ while legal advisor Kamala U of WAD gave a speech on ‘The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012’.
Secretary Sobita Mangsatabam of WAD also delivered a speech on the prevailing issues on women and children and its root causes and impacts on the society. An interaction programme was also held in connection with the prevailing issues and how to overcome the same.
Altogether the awareness programme was attended by 100 participants with 44 males and 56 female from class VIII, IX and X including teaching and non-teaching staffs of the school.
